The Northernmost Settlement in the World

Today we headed South to the Northernmost settlement in the world, the research town of Ny Ålesund. Walking through the little town with multicolored houses framed by white, we were greeted by the old locomotive used in the former coal mine. A little drizzle of snow and rain started and some winds made it really feel like the edge of the world.

We made our way out to the Amundsen mast, where the polar exploration hero lifted off towards the North Pole with the airship Norge in 1926. After talking about polar exploration the faster walkers continued to the monument stone for Umberto Nobile’s airship expedition that crashed after reaching the North Pole in 1928.

For a few hours, we walked the streets of the tiny settlement, some visited the telegraph station, others the old post office, and the heat inside the museum and souvenir shop was welcomed after the wind and snow outside.

We returned to the boat and after the daily briefing we had a lecture about the André Expedition to prepare us for the next day's destination: Virgohamna.
