Packisen and Karl XII øya

Finally, we reached the pack ice! The colours were amazing and we could see all shades of blue and white. With the rubber boats we made our way through the ice and a big seal watched us as we silently passed by.

The smallness of humans was palpable and it felt like we were one with the vast Arctic landscape. We disembarked on an ice floe for a group photo, wishing that this magical day in the pack ice would last forever.

Karl XII øya is one of the most remote and inaccessible islands in the Svalbard archipelago and a popular haunt for polar bears. We were glad that the Arctic fog had left us and under a blue sky a lively mountain of birds appeared. Here puffins swept by above us and we saw white-fronted gulls incubating in their nests. A while later we decided to land while walruses curiously watched us from the water. It was truly a marvellous day and we were grateful to have visited the remote Karl XII øya and its waters.
