Dorothee Hippel

Expedition leadar

German-born Dorothee has been passionately interested in the polar regions, especially the Northern Hemisphere, since her early years, which eventually led her to Iceland. She holds a master's degree in history, Scandinavian studies and literature from the University of Cologne.

While working in an office for a travel agency in Reykjavik, she soon discovered that her side job – guiding tours through Iceland – gave her much more joy. She therefore attended a 1-year course in Iceland to become a fully certified nature and hiking guide and graduated in the spring of 2016.

The same summer she worked for the first time in the Arctic on board an expedition ship and shortly after that decided to drop her office job to be able to follow her dream job as guide and lecturer on board and on land full time. As it combines her love for travelling, wildlife and nature, her interest in other cultures and societies as well as meeting people from around the world, with whom she can share her knowledge and enthusiasm, she considers it a perfect fit. Since then, she has been expanding her radius of work all the way down south to Antarctica.

When she is not on tour she additionally works as a freelancer for a German publishing house and still being based in Iceland, Dorothee enjoys the outdoor life, especially taking hikes through the amazing landscape, in her free time.

Most captivating during our expedition in west Greenland 2024 was the beauty of the Uummannaq fjord systems, with mountains rising up to 2,000 metres straight from the water's edge. Scale is a completely different thing here in Greenland and pictures just do not seem to do justice to this magnificent landscape.
