Ian Jansma

Guide

The spirit of exploration and love of nature came early to Ian while growing up in the Green Mountains of Vermont. After earning his degree in Philosophy from Bard College in upstate New York, he made the cross‐continental move to Kodiak Island, Alaska. Surrounded by unspoiled landscapes and legendary wildlife, Ian found his calling as a wilderness guide and naturalist.

Across the border in British Columbia, Ian poured his passion for wilderness areas into a years‐long campaign to secure protection for the Great Bear Rainforest. During these formative years on the tempestuous North Pacific Coast, Ian naturally became adept at seafaring, which became another of his great passions.

Ian’s long career in adventure tourism and environmental education eventually culminated in polar expedition guiding, which has taken him to our planet’s most remote, wild and pristine environments. As a general naturalist and guide, Ian is ready to reveal all aspects of the natural world. His deepest expertise is in the birdlife and marine mammals of the high latitudes and high seas. He is also eager to discuss the hundreds of national parks, wildlife preserves and spectacular natural landmarks he has explored on all seven continents.

Having embraced the itinerant lifestyle for the better part of two decades, Ian has recently adopted a more settled life in Tasmania, Australia. Still not immune to the call of the wild, he feels at home anyplace nature is still in control. Whether he is kayaking in Greenland, snorkeling in the South Pacific, or birdwatching in Patagonia, Ian loves to share his knowledge and experience with fellow explorers and nature lovers.
