Wednesday September 28, Namib-Naukluft National Park
The three balloons rose like three huge mushrooms in the dry desert early this morning. We had our own balloon, streered by Spanish Sancho, and after inflating the balloon we could all climb into the basket and then carried it away.
It's a very strange and amazing feeling to slowly slide through the air, supported by only hot air, and what can be more spectacular to do this than just above the Namib Desert? We now saw from above how the country lay, how the Tsauchab River ran through the sand on its way to the sea and how big the sand dunes were. They stretched west as far as we could see. The other two balloons gave perspective to everything and we even touched the tree tops with the gondola. After a sporty landing, breakfast was served in the middle of the desert.
Later in the afternoon it was time to explore the sand dunes by foot and we walked into the sand towards a place called "Dead Vlei". The appropriate name refers to the dead acacia trees that have died in the dry clay for almost a thousand years. The drought has mumified the trees in this surreal but colorful place.
