Our amazing guides are blogging all season from our three ships in Svalbard, and below can you read about an eventful day in the northwest corner of Svalbard!
We reached the north west corner of Svalbard quite early and it was blowing steeply so we decided to scout the ice edge in hope of spotting some wildlife from the bridge. Between Fuglesangen and Klövningen a group of young walruses lay in the water, but that was all we saw here. After lunch we decided to explore Fuglefjorden with our Zodiacs. In the beginning this seemed to be quite an empty place too, but the landscape and the weather was incredible. Closer to Svitjodtbreen big flocks of eider appeared and eventually we also found some king eider amongst them. In the middle of the fjord we even spotted small groups of puffins, which we had not seen up close so far during the trip.
Sjøveien picked us up and we steered towards Smererenburgbreen - it was rumoured that bear had been seen, and that turned out to be true! We could follow the bear from a distance and soon we launched our Zodiacs again. The bear walked along the coastline, heading north, and in Holmiabukta it stayed to fish. The light was perfect and we finally got to experience an amazing encounter up close!

Please note: Depending on the lens used for a photo or video shot an animal may appear to be closer than it is. We always follow strict wildlife guidelines to ensure that we do not cause any disturbance.
