After a beautiful morning discovering Texas bar and its polar desert, we headed towards the beautiful glacier of Monacobreen.
With its front of 5 km wide, this glacier at the end of the fjord is majestic. As soon as we arrive in the area, we get into our suits, get in the zodiacs and start driving towards the glacier front.
Our guide spotted a bearded seal laying on an ice floe. We slowly made our way to observe the animal laying on the ice after a meal of clams, fishes or crabs. We could observe the orange colour on the face. It is not the natural colour of the fur but oxide iron coloring the fur when they search for shellfish in the sand.
After spending a short period with this cute but bigger than expected creatures, we started cruising along the glacier front in silence, listening to the sparkling of the glacial ice melting and the beautiful shade of blues of the icebergs around us.
Glacial ice is made from snow fall and after a few thousand years, it turns into ice crystal. Trap in the ice, there is little bubble of air that has been compressed for century. When the ice is melting, the bubbles are popping. This is what we call the polar silence, not quite silence but really relaxing.
After 2.5 hours on the water, we slowly headed back to our floating home, M/S Sjøveien. It was an amazing afternoon in a true Arctic environment.
Please note: Depending on the lens used for a photo or video shot an animal may appear to be closer than it is. We always follow strict wildlife guidelines to ensure that we do not cause any disturbance.
