Season’s First Expedition

A successful start! From Bergen, Norway, along the Norwegian coast, with Svalbard as the final destination. PolarQuest guide Beau Pruneau reports from M/S Stockholm, four days into our first Arctic expedition of the season.

From Bergen, we headed north, stopping by the bird cliffs of Runde, visiting the historic seaside town of Ålesund, and spending the evening in the small, picturesque village of Øye.

Heading eastward in the middle of the night, we were greeted by an incredible display of northern lights dancing across the sky in shades of green, pink, and purple.

We then explored the famous Geirangerfjord area – first the settlement, then hiking up to a viewpoint at Skageflå, one of the most well-known and beautiful fjords in Norway.

Afterwards, we sailed overnight to the quaint, abandoned fishing village of Grip, where the remaining houses on the tiny, exposed island of rock are now used as summer homes.

Leaving Grip behind, we headed towards Kjeungskjærfyr, a beautiful old lighthouse along the central coast.

However, Mother Nature had other plans, as orcas were spotted just before we passed the lighthouse. Two pods swam back and forth, herding schools of fish into tighter groups to feed.

After passing Kjeungskjærfyr, we continued further north along the coast – ever northwards...

A fantastic start to our season.
